86 year old to cycle from Sittwe to Naypyitaw in honor of SEA Games

86 year old cyclist U Pyoo told Mizzima on August 27 that he will cycle from Sittwe in Rakhine State to Naypyitaw, in honor of the 27th SEA Games that will be hosted by Myanmar.

He added that he will start the 500 miles bicycle journey in October and it may take about one month to complete the journey.

He said, “I will leave Sittwe on October 24 and I am planning to reach Naypyitaw during the SEA Games.”

The journey will be U Pyoo’s seventh marathon bicycle-ride. He intends to not only honor the 27th SEA Games that is scheduled to be held in Naypyitaw from December 11 to 22, but also to motivate all Myanmar citizens to enjoy the SEA Games.

U Pyoo is a member of Myanmar Cycling Federation and permanent member of Sittwe Red Cross. He was also a marathon runner in his youth. He started cycling at the age of 30 years and began marathon cycling at 75.

During his marathon bicycle-rides, he has delivered speeches in primary, middle and high schools, urging students to abstain from smoking, alcohol and drugs.

U Pyoo's embarked on his sixth marathon bicycle-ride on December 16, 2012, from Kyaukphyu in Rakhine State to various cities in ten States/Regions of Myanmar. He covered a distance of 3000 miles during the 3 month journey and rode to Magway, Sagaing, Taunggyi, Naypyitaw, Mawlamyaing, Bago, Yangon and Pathein.
