The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is looking to build a U$3.2 billion coal-fired power plant in Dawei, according to a report in Bernama.

According to the EGAT governor, the proposed plant will produce 1,800 megawatts of electricity and Thailand will be able to buy the excess power.

Thailand has faced problems in gaining financial backing for the massive deep-sea port project, particularly from Japan, but has committed to 35 percent of the $9 billion-dollar Dawei industrial project located on the coast of Tanintharyi region in southern Myanmar.

The Dawei mega-project will also include numerous factories, as well as the construction of a highway linking Dawei to Bangkok.
